A Drink for the Soul

Some estimate that our bodies are made up of 80% fluid.  I am about 222 so about 178 pounds I carry around is water or fluid of some kind.  A couple of weeks ago I noticed I was loosing focus about 2 in the afternoon and felt drained all evening long.  I realized that after lunch I virtually stopped drinking water.  I have started sipping on a cup all the time and have noticed a huge increase in my energy and attentiveness in the afternoon.  Water is essential for our survival!

I read the story of a ship in distress of the Canadian coast, with its fresh water supply completely exhausted, sent out an SOS for fresh water.  The reply came back immediately:  ‘Let down your buckets.’  They had sailed into the fresh waters of the River St. Lawrence.  They were floating on their salvation, they just didn’t know it.  It was right under them....

The words of Jesus from John 7 provide us the same salvation the fresh waters of the St. Lawrence provided that distressed crew...

[37] On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. [38] Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” [39] Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (John 7:37-39 ESV)

For those of us who are weary, thirsty...a cool drink always awaits.  I am changing up my spiritual formation for the summer.  I am taking John 14-16 and plunging in slowly, going deep, prayerfully allowing the scripture to saturate me as I work through these 3 chapters.  I think Bill Hybles called this 'saturation reflection'...sounds good to me.  Let down your buckets and allow Jesus to fill them up.

Peace to you...
